NDLEA allows graduate to drown during raid

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have been accused of drowning a 32-year-old graduate of Law, Dapo Olasore, in the Agboyi, Alapere area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened on Sunday after the officials, who came in two vans without number plates, raided the area.
Our correspondent gathered that Olasore, aka Omopo , was about boarding a canoe to a neighbouring community to see a relative, when the officials stormed the community.
They were said to have shot sporadically into the air, sending frightened residents fleeing in different directions.
However, Olasore, who was by the riverside, was said to have been held by the trousers by the NDLEA men; and in a bid to free himself, fell into the water.
A boatman, who attempted to save him, was said to have been threatened with guns, leading to the death of the victim.
When our correspondent visited the community, he observed a crowd of residents and motorcyclists in the area, who had got wind of the news, at the riverside.
It was learnt that the victim, who graduated from a university in Ondo State, joined the National Union of Road Transport Workers in 2014, after he could not get a job.
His family was said to be resident in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
A witness and friend of the victim, Tosin Oshin, said the NDLEA officials arrived around 10.45am.
He said, “It happened around 10.45am. We suddenly saw two white vehicles in our community. They began shooting into the air and everybody started running helter-skelter.
“They went to the riverside, where
Omopo (Olasore) was about boarding a canoe. As Omopo saw one of them, he wanted to run like other people, but the officers held him. In the struggle to free himself, he fell into the river.
“A boat operator, who was about to rescue him, was threatened with guns. Omopo raised his hand and asked for help, but they didn’t help him.”
Oshin said immediately the incident happened, the officials fled the community with two suspects.
The boat operator, Dayo Seun, said before the victim finally drowned, he made an attempt to rescue him, but the officials prevented him.
He said, “I was on the other side of the river when I saw the man fall inside the river. I quickly paddled my canoe to the place he fell into to rescue him, but they pointed their guns at me, and asked me to go back.”
A resident, Omolara Adekunle, said the anti-narcotics officials were always harassing residents, adding that after making arrests, they usually collected about N40,000 for bail.
“It is not only the NDLEA that come here to conduct this illegal raid. The police too are complicit; they have no fear of God.
“Those they arrest, they collect between N40, 000 to N45,000 from their relatives before they release them.”
Another resident, Ayeni Oluwatoyin, told our correspondent that one of the suspects arrested, one Sunday Babalola, was planning his graduation as a qualified mechanic for August 26.
Oluwatoyin, who showed our correspondent a vest the suspect had distributed to his friends for the celebration, said Babalola was giving out the vests when he was arrested.
“After collecting the vests from him, they (NDLEA men) grabbed him by the neck and hit him. The boy begged them, but they did not let him go,” she said.
A resident said the community would hold a procession for the victim, after his remains had been found.
“By Tuesday, his body should float. We will hold a candlelight procession for him on Friday,” she said.
The NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, confirmed that there was a raid on the community by the agency, but denied knowledge that anybody was drowned.
He said, “The NDLEA went in search of a notorious drug dealer, named Saheed, following an information on his activities, which has constituted nuisance to people in that neighbourhood.
“Unfortunately, we did not find him as of the time of getting to the place. One Babalola was arrested and he was found with 1.3 kilogrammes of cannabis. During the operation, some people escaped through the river because they knew their activities contravened the NDLEA Act. But we are not aware anybody drowned.”

Boko Haram kills 37 in five Borno villages

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed no fewer than 37 people in five villages around Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, a military source and a local village defence group said on Friday.
The attackers, who arrived on motorcycles and in four-wheel drive vehicles, fired into houses and shot fleeing locals on Wednesday evening and in the early hours of Thursday, the military source added.
“Reports indicated a total of 37 people were killed by the insurgents during the separate attacks,” said the source who asked not to be named.
A member of a village defence group known locally as the Civilian Joint Task Force, Malum Idrissa, also told Reuters that the death toll was 37 and that the affected villages were 56 miles from Maiduguri.
Details of the attack emerged a day after President Muhammadu Buhari held a summit with regional counterparts to set up a joint military force to counter Boko Haram.
The Boko Haram terror group has killed thousands and left about 1.5 million displaced in the last six years.
The military relocated its command centre to Maiduguri this week for a renewed effort to tackle the Boko Haram activities.
Over 80 people were killed in bomb blasts in the city last week by the insurgents.

Jonathan conceded defeat to cover up political atrocities –Kinsman

Kinsman of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and leader of All Progressives Congress, Bayelsa State, Mr. Godwin Sidi, has revealed that Jonathan conceded defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari to cover up his atrocities in office.
Sidi, who was the Interim Secretary of the defunct New PDP, berated those commending Jonathan for conceding, saying the former President had no other choice but to do so.
Sidi, who spoke at a news conference in Yenagoa on Friday, also called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to commence the probe of Jonathan over the whereabouts of the Chibok girls.
“Jonathan’s conceding defeat is a ploy to cover up political atrocities he committed while in office,” he stated.
He accused the former President of taking the possession of property seized from a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieseigha.
Alamieseigha was impeached in 2005 by the state House of Assembly and later convicted for money laundering, paving way for Jonathan to become the governor of the state.
His property, home and abroad, was confiscated and returned to the state by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
While as a President, Jonathan, who always refers to Alamieseigha as his benefactor, granted state pardon in controversial circumstances to his former boss.
But Godwin revealed that some of the property seized from the former governor were in the possession of the former President.
He claimed that Jonathan took possession of one of the seized buildings of Alamieseigha at Maitama, Abuja, and later handed it over to his political associate and friend, who is a monarch in Bayelsa.
He also accused Jonathan of confiscating a 5-series bulletproof BMW car bought as a birthday gift for Alamieseigha by a friend.
Godwin, therefore, gave the former President 72 hours to return Alamieseigha’s property in his possession or face a lawsuit.
He further asked the National Assembly to compel Jonathan to give account of the whereabouts of the Chibok girls since he was the Chief Security Officer of the country when they were taken away by terrorists.
He said his group had concluded plans to drag the ex-President to the International Court of Justice over the Chibok girls.
Sidi, a former South-South Youth leader of the PDP asked the Code of Conduct Bureau to make Jonathan’s assets declaration public.
He alleged that the former President glorified in corruption and allowed graft to cripple the country.
Sidi added, “Jonathan was instrumental to the removal of Alamieseigha and prior to his removal, I remembered vividly that a friend of Alamieseigha bought him 5-series BMW car salon. Jonathan took that vehicle to Aso Rock.
“The vehicle is still in his possession. I want him to return that vehicle. Property, the one l know for now, there are other ones l am trying to investigate, of DSP in Maitama was given to Jonathan’s associate.
“I am giving them 72 hours to return the house to DSP as we prepare our papers to approach the court. The National Assembly should invite the President to give account of the Chibok girls because he was the Chief Security Officer at the time the girls were kidnapped.
“We are going to file our case at the ICJ over the Chibok girls. I am calling on the Code of Conduct Bureau to make Jonathan’s asset declaration public.”

Kashamu will be transfer to US for his drug-trafficking case

A Federal High Court in Lagos has asked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to suspend all actions on the move to extradite the Ogun East Senator-elect, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, to the United States to face trial on alleged drug-trafficking offences.
The presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, while adjourning hearing in all pending applications on the subject matter till June 19, said on Thursday that status quo must be maintained till all the applications were decided one way or the other.
Pending before Buba is the committal suit filed by  Kashamu against the Attorney General of the Federation and the Chairman of  NDLEA, citing them for contempt of court.
In response, the NDLEA has filed preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the matter.
Besides, the anti-narcotic agency is seeking the reversal of the court order of May 26 which directed it to withdraw more than 50 of his operatives which had laid siege to Kashamu’s house.
At the resumed proceedings on Thursday where the AGF, NDLEA Chairman and Kashamu himself were expected before the court, the NDLEA lawyer, A. M. Sunday, said the agency had yet to be served with the originating processes in Kashamu’s committal suit.
Sunday said all that the agency received was the court’s order of May 26 directing it to withdraw its armed operatives from Kashamu’s Lagos residence.
The lawyer, however, said the NDLEA had filed a motion seeking to set aside the court order, adding that the jurisdiction of the court was also being challenged.
However, Kashamu’s lawyer, Mr. R.A. Oluyede, in opposition to NDLEA, said the agency’s motion had no relevance, saying it had been overtaken by events.
Oluyede urged the judge to make additional orders to prevent NDLEA from overreaching the court.
He urged the court to nullify any warrant of arrest that might have been obtained through any source in an attempt to extradite Kashamu.
He urged the court to declare the fresh move by the respondents to commence extradition proceedings against him  in the face of the existing judgment of the court restraining them from doing so.
He also sought a court order directing the Inspector General of Police to provide security for Kashamu to prevent the respondents from making any attempt on his life.
But Buba, in a bench ruling, declined granting any of the newly sought orders but ordered all the parties not to take any action capable of undermining the processes before the court.
The judge said he would  have to adjourn further hearing to allow the service of court papers on all the parties.
He held, “The matter before the court is that of committal and challenge to jurisdiction. I shall adjourn for the hearing of the applications on its merits.”
The matter was adjourned till June 19, for the hearing of all pending applications.

Horror in Ibadan again! Cleric caught slaughtering woman

Barely one week after corpses and virtually dead victims were uncovered in a kidnappers den in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, a man described as a  Muslim cleric, Isa Salaudeen, was, allegedly, caught slaughtering  a woman,  identified as Chiwendu Nkwocha, in his room at Ori Eru, Idikan area of the city.

But, before he slaughtered  his victim, the cry of the woman reportedly attracted neighbours who came to her aid.
The suspect was said to have cut deep into the neck of the woman who was  rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

Eyewitnesses narrated that it was the persistent call for help from the victim that prompted them to run to the scene.
The suspect was said to have pretended performing evil exorcism on her when he suddenly took up a knife and started cutting her neck.

The first knife the attacker used, as Sunday Vanguard gathered, was blunt and the suspect replaced it with a  dagger.
But, before much harm could be done,  help came the way of the woman.

An eye witness  said, “People heard the lady’s  shouts from inside the house and kicked the door open  only to find that  the “Alfa” had pinned her to the floor and was already cutting her neck. The “Alfa”  ran out of the house when the first person broke in. The woman’s neck was already cut.

The head would have been totally cut off if help hadn’t come”.
A resident of the area, Taiwo Agunlofi, said angry youths in the area  caught the suspect  after trying to escape.
“Were  it  not for timely intervention, the Muslim cleric would have been lynched by angry youths,” he added.
It was further learnt that the victim was brought to Salaudeen by her boyfriend for “spiritual cleansing”. Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olabisi Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect was already in custody and had made useful statements.

Amazing: Woman gives birth after 14 years pregnancy!

The baby was promptly and aptly christined Miracle. And why not? If the mother had delivered at the expected time the child would have been a teenager by now and possibly in secondary school at the JSS 3 level.

Mercy, a single parent, said of her ordeal during the 14 years she was pregnant but could not give birth: “When I first took in, I knew that I was pregnant with signs and test that confirmed that I was. Four months later, I went to hospital for another test, the result showed that I wasn’t pregnant, but had fibroid.

Subsequently, I began to experience bleeding, at least once a day. Sometimes, my tummy would protrude in the semblance of pregnancy. I went to different hospitals, and I kept on receiving the same result that nothing was wrong with me. But deep down inside , I knew that all was not well with me.

Churches and native doctors

“So I was taken aback when a midwife told me I was pregnant. But considering the test which showed I had fibroid, I was angry with the midwife for giving me what I felt was a false prophecy of hope. Thereafter, I started going from one church to another and from one native doctor to the other. The results that I got from them all remained the same. I became more feeble and confused that I prayed for death to come.

“I went again to the midwife two years after and complained to her about the pains that I was going through, she told me again that it was not fibroid but pregnancy; she advised me to be more prayerful so that God will deliver me from the hands of the devil. I kept on praying and at the same time asking myself that if truly I’m pregnant, why is it that the baby was not kicking?

“I bought many concoctions that they said could cure fibroid and drank them. I even drank 12 bottles of a local cleanser but to no avail. This went on for years. Then God took pity on me and decided to wipe my tears.

On the day I gave birth to my baby girl, I initially thought that worms were trying to come out of my body not knowing that it was a baby. This was what I told the midwife when we came to her. But after examining me she told me to push.

I ignored her. I became unconscious for about 15 minutes and when I regained consciousness, I heard the cry of a baby. I was surprised and confused seeing my baby. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Hmm,I thank God for my life and that of my baby Miracle. I named her Miracle because she is truly a miraculous child”.

Miraculous child

The midwife at the Celestial Church of Christ, Kadoso Parish, Ajegunle where Mercy gave birth confirmed the development, especially the role she played.

The woman who simply gave her name as Mrs Ajetima informed thus: “She was pregnant for 14 years and was unable to give birth during this period. Then on Saturday around 6:30am I saw two persons carrying her to this place. When she came inside, I laid her down and asked one of my daughters to examine her, after the examination, I found out that it was a baby that was about coming out and not worms. I asked her to push and she refused. My daughter gave her a hard slap on her laps since she refused to push.

Behold a baby with placenta came out! I started shouting, calling on people to come and see for themselves that Mercy was truly pregnant, because if not, people will start to say that that Celestial woman has given Mercy a baby. Within a twinkle of an eye, the whole place was filled with people. God is wonderful”.

Also affirming the happy development, Mercy’s closest friend, Odunayo Odeyemi had this to say: “I have known mercy for over nine years now. I met her with the pregnancy . In fact, she did not know that she was pregnant. I followed her to many places but her problems kept on increasing. Merely looking at Mercy then before she gave birth, you will notice that she wasn’t okay. I kept advising her to have faith in God because I had experienced the same thing. I was pregnant for three years and three months and God delivered me.

“Mercy came to me on that fateful day around 4am begging me to give her a pain reliever, that she was having pains all over her body. I dressed up and took her to a man that sells drugs. After taking the drug, on our way home, she started having serious pains. I called her brother and we both took her to the midwife. Hours later, she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl. We all were surprised because we never expected such a miracle to happen. She had a complete baby.”

Robert Davidson, one of Mercy’s friends, said that he concluded after seeing Mercy with a protruded tummy for three years that she had fibroid. So, “it came to me as a shock to learn that she delivered a bouncing baby girl.”

For Chidimma Ibe, a neighbour: “She always complained to me that she had stomach pains all these period. She told me that she had fibroid and sometime, she will complain of different things. She was totally confused as to what her condition was. I’m very much surprised and happy she gave birth to a complete baby girl. It was truly a miracle. God was on her side. God is wonderful because all the concoctions she took were enough to kill the baby.”

On the father of Baby Miracle, Mercy informed that they got separated on account of the ordeal that attended her pregnancy. “Friday is the name of my baby’s father. Actually, we are not married. He just proposed to me and I became pregnant for him. He knew about the pregnancy. He always gave me money for tests and scans but he got tired and left me after waiting for me for over a year without seeing any sign of a baby. I have no option than to go my own way,” she informed.

FIFA U20: We are going to miss my best players - Coach Manu Garba

Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba has allayed fears that Kelechi Iheanacho, Isaac Success and Moses Simon would be found wanting at the FIFA U20 World Cup after they all failed to make the team’s training camp in Germany.

All three players were busy with their respective clubs, hence their failure to make the Germany training camp, but made the final list of 21 and Manu has explained why he included all three players in his team despite his earlier stance that he won’t include players who didn’t make the Germany training camp.

“I said that because the players who have been training with us understand our philosophy and have undergone all the trainings, but you can’t take away anything from Success, who is playing for a club like Granada and he is injury free and doing well.

“Moses is the most important player at Belgian club Gent. Kelechi has been on superb form. He is one player who can be relied upon if he is free of injury and I believe he has recovered from that injury.

“I believe their inclusion in the team will go a long way in adding more strength to the team,” he said.

Manu went on to state that he has no fears whatsoever, explaining that they already understand the team’s philosophy, but adds that none of them have an automatic starting berth.

“I don’t have any fear because these players have been with us. Even Moses Simon was with us in the early part of the U17 team before he went on to play for the U20 team. He may not know our philosophy, but for Kelechi and Success, they know how we play right from the U17s. Kelechi even played the qualifiers.

“But we are also not saying these players will come in automatically to the first team, they will be coming in gradually for them to find a synergy with the other players.

Police arrested two kidnappers troubling Ekiti State

Ekiti State Police Command, yesterday, arrested two people believed to be kidnappers, who have been terrorising the people of the state lately.

This disclosure was made in Ado Ekiti in a broadcast by the state governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose.

According to Fayose, one Olumide, 31 and one Folorunsho, both from Esure Ekiti, were arrested by the police between Ikere and Iju, while trying to escape.

Also arrested was a woman believed to be the wife of one of the kidnappers, simply known as Augustina.

He further said a manhunt has been launched for the remaining five to six kidnappers, who are believed to hail from Benin and its environs in Edo State.

Governor Fayose, who noted that the three people who accommodated them were also arrested, said his government is planning to enact a law that will empower the police to arrest landlords of criminals in the state.

He reiterated the readiness of government to reward anyone one who could provide useful information leading to arrest of kidnappers and armed robbers.

Fayose further advised people of the state particularly residents of Atikankan and Bata areas of the state capital, considered as the hideouts of criminals, to report any suspected person to the police.

He also warned security personnel who have been serving as informants to the criminals to desist from such acts, saying whoever is caught will face severe consequences.

Boko Haram: It is a Miracle we were alive - Rescued Victims

On Sunday, May 10, 2015, Vanguard Features, VF, visited Malkohi Settlement, about 25km from Yola, Adamawa State capital, to see victims of Boko Haram insurgency freed from the Sambisa forest enclave of the dreaded Boko Haram terror group. They had been freed by the joint military task force currently battling to free all the territories captured by the insurgents in their six-year reign of terror.

Happy to have come out of the proverbial Lion’s den alive, Amina Suleiman and Farida Audu (not real names), two young women from Gumsiri village (about 30km from Chibok)in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, relay their horrible experiences to VF. The Sambisa forest with an area of 60,000 square kilometers, stretches from Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa to some parts of Kano State.

Invasion and abduction

sambisa-1Amina, sitting comfortably on the double-bunk bed in the dormitory was the first to speak: “It was 4.00pm on a Friday during the call for muslim prayers when Boko Haram insurgents invaded our village, shooting sporadically as they entered. They killed some people, mostly men, and led us – women and children – to the front court of the palace of the village head.

Some of the insurgents were busy setting houses on fire while others were shooting and killing people.

There was confusion all over the place. At a point, we were ordered to start walking towards the forest. In the course of the journey to a village close to ours, five men were slaughtered in our presence; their stomachs ripped open while their heads were tucked in the bleeding flesh. A man who was supposed to be among the murdered five escaped into the bush with bullet wounds.”

Journey into the forest

“We continued the journey and got to Bita, (a village bordering Damboa and Gwoza local government areas of Borno State) where we spent the night. We were about 300 in number. Those that had wrappers spread them on the ground and laid down, while those of us who had nothing laid on bare ground covered with shrubs and other plants with sharp edges.

“The following day, we continued to Gwoza. Our children were thirsty, hungry and tired. We spent three months in Gwoza and when they heard that soldiers were coming, they moved us to the outskirts of the town and abandoned us there under some trees in the forest.”

Feeding

Continued Amina in her small voice: “They gave us very little food consisting of stale maize flour stolen from farmers and brought into the forest. The flour was black and unfit for human consumption. For soup, they gave us dry okra or kuka (dry baobab leaves) with little seasoning; no protein at all. So, many of us, especially the children, fell sick. At a point, I had to dig some swampy areas looking for fish and luckily, I got four boneless fish usually found underground. The water was not good for consumption even though we forced ourselves to take it to remain alive.”

Sambisa6In contrast, she said the insurgents slaughtered cows, rams and chickens on daily basis. Talk about George Orwell’s Animal Farm where although all animals were equal on paper but some were more equal than others in reality! “We lived one day at a time, praying to God for deliverance,” said Farida who was breast-feeding her baby.

On the move again

“One Tuesday evening, they heard that the military was coming and they asked us to move again, vowing that we will not secure our freedom because they were equal to the task and even if they were over-powered, they would not go down alone as we would be used as human shields.

“We started moving further into the forest on empty stomach. As we walked, they followed behind to ensure we didn’t escape. We walked until about 2.00am the following day before we were allowed to stop and rest. But before daybreak, they woke us up to continue the journey further into the forest. We walked until 7:30 pm when it was time for the last Muslim prayer of the day.”

The forest

Asked to describe the Sambisa forest, Amina said: “It’s a bush. There are no houses, so when the sun is up, it is unbearably hot and at night, it is very cold and uncomfortable. As a result, many of the children fell ill. The insurgents would put up temporary tents where they stay with their wives. Sometimes we didn’t even get the opportunity to pray and we stayed three, four days without praying.

The insurgents claim they are doing the work of God but that is not true. They prayed with boots on and enter the mosque with shoes. Maybe they were doing that so as to be ready at any point in time to move or fight the soldiers.”

Fowls more valuable than humans

“Slaughtering of human beings was very common and it was done with so much brutality. It was as if chickens had more prestige and importance. “Any time we had the opportunity to pray, we always called on God to have mercy on us and deliver us. Sometimes we fasted. One day, we got news that the military was coming – thanks to a small radio we got at Gwoza. Usually, one of us will hide under a tree to listen to news and tell the rest of us all that had been said.”

Rape

Said Farida: “No one was raped in our camp. May be it happened in some other camps because we were kept in different camps. Our captors have rules they adhered to. If one is caught stealing, his limbs are cut off. If he commits adultery or fornication, he is killed and if he lies, he is beaten severely. We were not taken into the interior of the forest. No one in our camp was forcefully given out in marriage but they always insulted and cast aspersions on us, calling us infidels and threatening to slaughter us, especially those of us who were not pregnant.

Sometimes they would tell us they want to marry us out, and we told them we won’t enter any marriage contract that God has not ordained. By this time, we had lost all sense of fear. Although this usually made us feel depressed but we never lost hope in God. We saw ourselves breathing but dead inside. We knew we were alive but didn’t know nor understand how.”

What the insurgents looked like
Nigeria Army

Nigeria Army

“They are human beings like us; most of them are dirty, smelly, with unkempt hair and beards, and some go bare-footed. Some of them are like walking corpses as a result of hunger. Many are in the group without knowing or understanding the ideology. Some people voluntarily take themselves to the group and request to be initiated. Some move without ammunition and carry only sticks as weapons. Most of them are young men between the ages of 15 and 30.

Some braid their hair and have longer hair than some women. When they raid towns or villages, they steal everything, including clothes, and after selection, the ones they don’t like are burnt. Some have their heads completely shaved and look very neat and wear good clothes. We never saw anyone above 40 years or even up to that age,” stated Farida.

Mode of operation

“Usually, when they attack villages, they either kill the men or conscript them into the group, especially teenagers, as the men in most cases are killed. When they came to our village, there was a boy of about 12 years who was captured. Before the arrival of the soldiers, they killed him. Sometimes when they go to a village and make a request for a number of boys, if their request is not met, they threaten bloodshed.”

Initiation

“After the boys are captured, they are given a blood-like liquid mixed with palm dates (dabino)   to drink. The insurgents would raise the cup containing the drink above their heads and then pass it to the boys to sip one after the other. After taking the drink, the boys would start behaving like the terrorists in thought and deed. They would try to defend themselves, telling us that people have accused them of drinking blood and eating flesh but that it is all lies,” said Farida who insisted she had witnessed the initiation.

Brainwashing

Said Amina: “Sometimes they would gather us together and tell us that anybody who wants a quick visa to paradise should come and they would strap some devices on her body (Improvised Explosive Devices) and she would go to Maiduguri, Abuja and other big towns to kill people, but we refused.”

Deliverance

“One day, we heard the sound of a helicopter hovering over the forest; after sometime, a bomb was released into the forest and there was confusion everywhere. The wives of the terrorists tried to convince us to run with them, claiming that the soldiers were pagans and would kill us too but we refused to be deceived because we had enough information on radio on what was going on. Moreover, we had been praying for the soldiers to come and free us. So some young boys were asked to keep an eye on us.Sambisa-Forest1

“Before we knew what was happening, the soldiers were in the forest. When some of the terrorists who couldn’t escape saw this, they came into our midst to use us as human shields because they wanted us dead. What we did was to lie flat while the soldiers engaged them in fierce battle and killed many of them.

Some were smashed by armoured tanks. We were screaming that we were not part of them but abducted victims. That was how we were saved.”

The former captives are slowly but steadily making progress, thanks to the efforts of NEMA, Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency and other non-governmental organisations who are doing so much to make life comfortable for these innocent victims. Already, some have been reunited with their families.

Female NYSC member was killed on Ilorin street

ILORIN—Tragedy struck in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, on Sunday night as a member of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, serving in the state, Miss Yetunde Shukurat Idowu, was found on the street, dead.

Vanguard reliably gathered that her last visit before she was found dead was to the popular shopping mall, Shoprite, located along Fate Road.

Consequently, concerned roommate and neighbours constituted themselves into a search party that found Yetunde stone dead on a street at GRA, Ilorin.

Vanguard also gathered that the family of the late youth corps member had been contacted, while her corpse would be released today (Wednesday) on the insistence of the family.

It was also gathered that the deceased, who was an indigene of Ogun State but lived along the popular Fate Road, Ilorin, was of the NYSC 2014 Batch ‘B’ set.

Vanguard investigations, however, revealed that the corps member who went to Shoprite on the fateful day, must have been given a free ride.

Police

Contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, but could not confirm whether or not the late corps member was given a ride, saying they were still investigating.

Asked whether she was given a ride, he said: “All these are guess work. Nobody has volunteered any statement to us. If anybody has any information, maybe they should get to us.

“As far as we are concerned, it was a reported case of ‘found dead’ with a broken skull and bruises. For now, I cannot tell you whether it was a case of rape, abduction or kidnapping.

“We are still investigating. We cannot conclusively say it is a case of abduction or ritual killing because no part of the body was missing.

“It could be a case of a hit-and-run by a careless driver or an outright accident. I cannot confirm that she was raped because all the examinations conducted on her does not show any sign of rape and we are still investigating. But I cannot say exactly what happened.”

He said the corpse would be released today, while investigation was ongoing.

NYSC

The state NYSC Public Relations Officer, Mr. Oladipo Morakinyo, confirmed the incident yesterday, adding that the family had been contacted.

He said: “It is only the medical expert that can diagnose what actually killed her and this is beyond the scope of our scheme.

“The most important thing is that a corps member died and NYSC has done the necessary thing that we are expected to do. We have contacted the family.”

The corps member served with the state broadcasting corpo-ration, Radio Kwara, Ilorin.

Tribunal Give fair Judgment - Ekwunife

Onitsha—The senator-elect for Anambra Central senatorial district, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, has called on the election petition tribunal sitting in Awka to ensure a free and fair judgment in the petitions filed by candidates from various political parties’ candidates contesting the April 11 National Assembly poll.

Speaking to reporters in Awka shortly after she filed her reply to the petition brought against her victory by Chief Victor Umeh of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, at the tribunal, Ekwunife said she won the senatorial election convincingly, adding that Umeh had no reason to challenge the result of the election.

Ekwunife, a serving member representing Njikoka, Anaocha and Dunukofia Constituency in the House of Representatives, noted that her party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  defeated Chief Victor Umeh roundly in all elective positions in Anambra Central senatorial district.

According to her, despite the hate campaigns against her and all efforts made by the state government to frustrate her ambition through letters to presidents-general, traditional rulers, religious bodies as well as market leaders, the people came out in their numbers to vote her into office.

She expressed confidence that the Election Petitions Tribunal, headed by Justice Aganaba, would do justice to the petition brought against her, insisting that the election was free, fair and credible.

“I have faith in the tribunal. The matter is not a complicated one because everything is clear enough to prove that I won the election,” she said.

NLC threatens people to stay at home if fuel scarcity persists

The Nigerian Labour Congress on Monday threatened to direct workers to stay at home if the current fuel scarcity across the country is not addressed.
Factional NLC Deputy National President, Isa Aremu, stated this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Kaduna.
The NLC statement is coming barely four days before the Peoples Democratic Party-led government will hand over the affairs of the nation to the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, May 29.
Aremu said, “If the current scarcity and price robbery of Nigerians continue, NLC will have no choice but compel workers to stay at home.
“Workers certainly cannot fuel themselves to work with their blood. There is a limit to slavery and state marketers’ extortion.
“With an outgoing President and incoming one, five past heads of state alive, 36 state governors and hundreds of legislators and scores of ministers, no country on earth parades the highest number of state actors like Nigeria.
“Yet, there is no governance with respect to distribution of basic products like petroleum and kerosene.”
According to him, it is time Nigerians stopped agonising in the hands of cabals holding the nation to ransom for several weeks through deliberate deprivation of petroleum products.
He added, “What is happening in Nigeria amounts to economicide, which is a conscious subjugation of 170 million people to economic ruination through unsustainable petroleum import-based racket.
“This is an unofficial declaration of war against the citizens by combined forces of irresponsible ruling elite and bussisness crooks.
“This agony of capitalism must be mass resisted by all Nigerians.”

Jonathan signs violence against persons, immigration bills

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday signed two bills, earlier passed by the National Assembly, into law.
The bills, which have now become Acts, are the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 and the Immigration Act 2015.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, confirmed the development to State House correspondents.
Jonathan signed the bills into laws barely four days to the expiration of his tenure.
The President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, is billed to be inaugurated as the country’s next President on Friday.
The Senate had on May 4 passed the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 into law.
The Act  seeks to prohibit female circumcision or genital mutilation, forceful ejection from home and harmful widowhood practices.
It also prohibits abandonment of spouse, children and other dependents without sustenance, battery and harmful traditional practices.
It also intends to eliminate violence in private and public life and provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims of violence, and punishment of offenders.
The law also prohibits economic abuse, forced isolation and separation from family and friends, substance attack, depriving persons of their liberty, incest, indecent exposure, among others.
The bill was sponsored by the Leader of the Senate, Victor Ndoma-Egba.
In his remarks, Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided at the session where the bill was passed, said the passage of the bill would provide adequate protection for the vulnerable in the society and punish those who take advantage of them.

Stakeholders meet Senate, begin fuel lifting today

Stakeholders in the petroleum sector, at a public hearing organised by the Joint Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources(Upstream and Downstream), on Monday resolved to mobilise their members for the immediate distribution of fuel across the country.
Senator Magnus Abe,  who read a communique signed by the stakeholders after the session,  explained that the  Finance Minister/Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and other stakeholders, who attended the meeting, unanimously agreed to the peace deal, in the interest of the nation.
He also explained that following the intervention of the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the strike embarked upon by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the  Petroleum and Energy Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, had been called off.
He said, “We have agreed on the following:  first is that the Minister of Finance will give an undertaking to the Major Marketers and Depot Managers that the work of the committee being headed by CBN and PPPR, on the outstanding claims, would be concluded and be reflected in the hand over notes to the incoming administration.”
The Senator said the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria had agreed to begin lifting of petroleum products nationwide within the next six hours and to also pay the National Association of Road Transport Owners, the transport cost that would be determined by them.
He added that the Depot Managers had agreed to open all their depots nationwide so that lifting would commence and had agreed with the DPR to withdraw the operational licence of any depot which was not opened for fuel lifting.
Abe said the NNPC had directed all relevant staff, working in the various depots across the country, to work 24 hours, including Saturday and Sunday, for the next two weeks until normalcy returns to the sector.
He explained that the committee would reach out to the Lagos State Government on the agreement reached and the need for their contribution towards ensuring smooth lifting of fuel in all the depots.

Troops kill terrorists, rescue 20 women, children from Sambisa

The Defence Headquarters on Saturday said scores of Boko Haram terrorists had died and 20 women and children had been rescued during a military operation in Sambisa Forest in Borno State, on Friday.

This is contained in a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, on Saturday.

”Despite continuous encounter with large number of land mines, which still litter the Sambisa Forest, troops have forged ahead with the ongoing offensive operations as scores of the terrorists died in the assault on their bases on Friday,” Olukolade said.

He said several of the terrorists’ weapons and equipment were destroyed during the encounter.

According to him, over 10 soldiers were, however, wounded, while one died, following explosions of land mines along the routes of advance.

He said some equipment were also damaged or affected by the detonation of land mines in several points in the forest.

Olukolade added, ”A total of 20 women and children were rescued at the end of the Friday operation. They have all been airlifted out of the forest.

”The wounded soldiers have also been moved out for necessary treatment.

”Two major ammunition dumps, maintained by the terrorists in the forest were also destroyed, along with the four additional terrorists camps that were smashed in the operation of Friday.”

He explained that an armoured tank and over 10 vehicles, of various types, being used for terrorists operations as well as 70 motorcycles and 15 tricycles had also perished during the operation.

The Defence spokesman said air and artillery bombardment of identified terrorists camps and locations in various parts of the forest, including the Alafa aspect, were still ongoing as troops continued the offensive against the terrorists.

Olukolade added that a cordon-and-search operation around Bitta, Borno State, had been intensified following an incident, where two young boys were wounded after picking up a grenade from a refuse dump

Fuel crisis cripples Nigeria Economy

escalated the already dire situation, forcing motorists and other consumers to the black market.

Investigations also showed that the pump price of the product in the few filling stations who had it ranged from N120 to as high as N400 per litre.

The high price of the product, according to our correspondents, has caused a hike in transport fare with the increase as high as 300 per cent in some places. Many commuters who were caught unawares by the development were seen trekking long distances to their destinations while others were forced to return home.

Most filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory have shut down following the non-availability of the commodity.

The few stations that were dispensing the product had long queues of vehicles with desperate motorists besieging their gates with the hope of getting fuel to pursue their economic and social activities.

However, black marketers were not short of supply as they chased after vehicles along the road selling fuel at N200 per litre to those who could afford it.

Some stations sold fuel at N140 per litre, but few motorists patronised them, preferring to stay in the queue for hours to buy at the official N87 per litre.

Checks showed that most filling stations in the satellite towns including Kubwa, Zuba, Nyanya, Kuje and others sold fuel for N140 per litre.

In Osun State, the situation became worse on Saturday with virtually all filling stations in Osogbo, the state capital remaining shut .

Our correspondent observed that the few filling stations which sold the product on Friday sold it for N150 per litre.

The fuel scarcity forced some residents of Osogbo and other towns including Ede to stay indoors except for those who had very important things to do.

A commercial bus driver, who identified himself as Taye, told our correspondent that the increment in the fare had forced commuters to resort to trekking.

He said, “We just pray that the situation will become normal next week. We are really suffering. There are no commuters on the road; it seems everybody is indoor.”

In Ondo State, a litre of petrol was sold for between N130 and 150 on Saturday. Some filling stations sold the product in Akure, the state capital, while some filling stations were closed.

The fuel scarcity has also forced commercial motorcyclists in the state to increase their fare and thus making many residents to complain.

The situation is not different in Benue where the product is currently sold for between N130 and N150 in Makurdi, the state capital, and major towns of Gboko, Kastina-Ala and Otukpo even as it is hard to come by.

In Taraba State, the situation was largely the same. The product which was sold for between N150 and N160.

In Rivers State, motorists faced a tough time as the commodity remained scarce within Port Harcourt, the state capital. Long queues were noticed in many filling stations that sold fuel. This was between N120 and N140.

In Calabar, petroleum depots were virtually dry. This put so much hardship on motorists and commuters as the price of a litre of petrol went up to between N150 and N250 at independent filing stations and the black market.

Filing stations owned by major marketers did not sell fuel. It was gathered that the major marketers are making brisk businesses by selling their products at the depots to independent marketers at a higher price.

Transport fare had also rose to more than 100 per cent within the Calabar metropolis.

The only NNPC Mega Station along the Murtala Mohammed Highway that was selling fuel had long queue stretching over three kilometres.

A motorist, Mr. Ben Amajo, who said he had spent more than five hours queuing up at the NNPC Mega Station, said he was completely fed up with the situation in the country.

Most of the active filling stations in Enugu State were selling petrol between N140 and N150, while the commodity sold mostly at the cost of N125 and N130 per litre in Abia and Ebonyi states.

The situation was the same in Imo
